Emotional Response to Color Across Media
نویسندگان
چکیده
In this study, the characteristics of emotional responses to color are explored in two empirical studies. In particular, the relationship between color attributes and emotional dimensions—valence, arousal, and dominance—is analyzed. To account for the cognitive quantity of color, 36 color stimuli were selected following hue and tone categorizations and based on the CIELAB LCh system. In one experiment, the colors were presented on A5-size glossy paper whereas the identical colors were displayed on CRT monitors in the other experiment. In both experiments, the subjects assessed the emotional responses to each color stimulus using a Self-AssessmentManikin (SAM), which consists of three rows of five pictograms illustrating the three dimensions of emotion, respectively. The empirical results provide evidence that the patterns of affective judgment of colors can be profiled in terms of the three dimensions of emotion (Reliability coefficient, Cronbach’s alpha [ 0.7). All three attributes of colors, i.e. hue, Chroma, and Lightness, influenced the emotional responses (repeated measurement One-way ANOVA, P \ 0.05), and especially, Chroma was always positively correlated with each of the three emotional dimensions (r [ 0.60 P \ 0.01). Moreover, the results indicate that emotional responses to color vary more strongly with regard to tone than to hue categories. Comparing the SAM ratings between the two experiments, a systemic explanation has yet to be found to conclude that there is a media effect on the emotional responses to colors. Furthermore, the process of affective judgment of colors and the limit of color as an emotion elicitor are discussed. 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Towards modeling of Readers' Emotional State response for the automated annotation of documents
This work presents an experimental study towards modeling the readers’ emotional state as a response to font and typesetting elements of documents presented on a LCD display. Any content and/or domain dependent information was excluded from the document that was tested. An automated computer-based experimental procedure has been followed based on the paper-and-pencil Self Assessment Manikin Tes...
متن کاملImplicit Media Tagging and Affect Prediction from video of spontaneous facial expressions, recorded with depth camera
We present a method that evaluates emotional response from spontaneous facial activity recorded by a depth camera. The automatic evaluation of emotional response, or affect, is a fascinating challenge with many applications, including human-computer interaction, media tagging and human affect prediction. Our approach in addressing this problem is based on the inferred activity of facial muscles...
متن کاملThe role of emotional mediation in musical and vocal sound-color correspondence
This study investigates the role of emotional mediation in sound-color cross-modal correspondence, using two complementary sets of validated stimuli: the Montreal Affective Voices (MAV; Belin et al., 2008), and Musical Emotional Bursts (MEB; Paquette et al., 2013). These stimuli were presented to participants for color associations, emotional associations, and rated for arousal and valence. The...
متن کاملWeb-based an Emotion-Responsive Color Adaptation Process for Interactive Virtual Building Model
The primary objective of this research is to realize an adaptable online architectural virtual reality (VR) model whose color attributes can be changed dynamically according to the identified emotional state of the user. We believe that the current approach to developing electronic based design environments is fundamentally defective with regard to support for multi-person multi-modal design in...
متن کاملUsing Social Media to Measure Student Wellbeing: A Large-Scale Study of Emotional Response in Academic Discourse
Student resilience and emotional wellbeing are essential for both academic and social development. Earlier studies on tracking students’ happiness in academia showed that many of them struggle with mental health issues. For example, a 2015 study at the University of California Berkeley found that 47% of graduate students suffer from depression, following a 2005 study that showed 10% had conside...
